Real Madrid began their 2026/27 UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday.
Kylian Mbappé and Federico Valverde scored in the first half to give the hosts a two-goal advantage before Carlos Augusto pulled one back for Inter in the second half.
Inter started strongly and created several opportunities, but Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois produced a series of important saves to keep his side ahead.
Mbappé opened the scoring after 14 minutes, finishing a move involving Brahim Díaz.
Valverde then doubled Madrid’s lead in the 23rd minute after capitalising on an error involving Inter goalkeeper Josep Martínez.
Inter continued to threaten, with Courtois denying attempts from Curtis Jones, Lautaro Martínez and Hakan Çalhanoğlu.
Carlos Augusto reduced the deficit in the 77th minute, but Madrid held on through the closing stages to secure all three points.
The victory gave José Mourinho a winning start against his former club in his second spell as Real Madrid manager.
Inter will now look to respond after suffering defeat in their opening league-phase fixture, while Madrid take three points from their first match of the competition.
