Nick Paton Walsh, the Chief International Security Correspondent for CNN, is the target of a criminal prosecution launched by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) on Thursday, alleging that he crossed the border unlawfully.
The British journalist is charged with illegal entry into the Kursk area to record a report on a recent incursion by Ukrainian forces.
Two Ukrainian journalists were the subject of identical cases, according to the FSB. These activities are in response to a CNN report from Sudzha, a Russian border town that is currently occupied by Ukraine, which aired on August 16.
The report documented the journalists’ journey alongside a Ukrainian military convoy from Ukraine into Sudzha, where they encountered a largely deserted town populated by a handful of elderly residents.
Moscow would soon issue an international arrest warrant related to the three journalists’ cases, the FSB stated, adding that the illegal border crossing charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

As of yet, CNN has not issued a public response to the FSB’s statement.
Russian officials called a senior US diplomat in Moscow earlier in the week to discuss worries about the “provocative actions” of US journalists covering the Kursk region.
The Ukrainian incursion into Kursk, which began on August 6th, marks the most significant breach of Russia’s borders by a foreign power since World War Two.
While Russia continues its efforts to repel Ukrainian forces from Kursk, it also reported thwarting a separate Ukrainian attempt to breach the border in the Bryansk region on Thursday.
