The management of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), under the Presidency has stressed the need for urgent review of the 15-year-old National Environmental Policy to accommodate world emerging issues such as climate change, marine pollution, and biodiversity, inline with UNEP regulations.
The Director General NESREA, Mr. Innocent Bariako Barriate, who made this known Thursday in Abuja, remarked that these gaps have been discovered lacking in the regulations of the agency in the course of operations since the 15 years of its existence.
Recall that the federal government, has keyed into the United Nations’ war against climate change, with the resolve to ensure that Nigeria fully observe policy recommendations of the world body
To this regard, he said these factors have necessitated the agency to seek assistance through the quick-wins of its 5 year impact plan from the United Nations Development Programmes and the Livelihood empowerment against poverty (UNDP/LEAP) and the small scale funding agreement (SSFA) to facilitate the review of the regulations.
Barikor, observed that, “the National Environmental (permitting and licensing system) regulations is among the first set of the 11 national environmental regulations developed and gazetted in 2009 which set out to control the activities of the regulated community. The regulations according to the NESREA DG, seeks to achieve statutory environmental targets and outcomes such as, improvement in our air quality, environmental conservation and avoidance of exposure to waste and hazardous substances by using environmental permits to the regulated community.”
