In Nigeria’s richly layered music history, certain names carry weight long before the music is heard. CJ Obassey, born CJ Obassey on January 29, the son of the late gospel pioneer Reverend Patty Obassey and Evangelist Esther Obassey, into a home where music was not merely entertainment but ministry, discipline, and purpose is one such name.
Raised in Enugu, the Coal City State, his earliest exposure to sound came not from popular radio hits, but from watching his father prepare for church ministrations and international performances, perfecting chords, melodies, and messages that would touch thousands.
That early immersion, however, came with its own defining moment in 2012, at just 11 years old, when he lost his father, a personal tragedy that would quietly shape his future. Rather than follow the expected path of traditional gospel performance, CJ chose a more introspective response: a commitment to mastery where music became both refuge and responsibility. What began as curiosity soon turned into discipline, as he spent years honing his skills across multiple instruments, eventually finding his clearest voice through the electric guitar, the instrument that would come to define his signature sound.
Today, CJ Obassey is recognized as a multi-instrumentalist with a rare depth of musical understanding, with proficiency in electric and bass guitar, drums, keyboards, clarinet, and recorder, making him stand out in an industry often driven by digital shortcuts.
His approach is rooted in feel and truth, blending Afrobeat, R&B, soul, blues, jazz, and indigenous influences into guitar-led expressions that prioritise emotion over spectacle. For CJ, sound is not about excess, but clarity: melody serving meaning.
With such a philosophy in music, he has quietly placed himself at the heart of some of Nigeria’s most notable records in recent years with the use of his guitar and musical input allowing him feature on projects by artists such as Omah Lay, Ladipoe, Odumodublvck, Yemi Alade, Ajebo Hustlers, Niniola, Jaywillz, CDQ, Kaestyle, and Wizard Chan, among others. His contribution to Ladipoe’s Hallelujah earned him the Lyrics of the Year award in 2024, further cementing his reputation as a musician whose work resonates beyond the surface of sound.
Alongside his work behind the scenes, CJ has steadily developed his identity as a recording artist. With releases such as Live My Life, One Lege, E.M.M.A 1&2, Love Language, and Pass Me the Liquor, as well as the Sleeping Giant EP soon to be released, he presents music as lived experience: honest, reflective, and unfiltered earning him performances, including the Sleeping Giant Live Concert, revealing an artist more concerned with connection than theatrics, allowing musicianship to take centre stage.
In an era defined by speed and spectacle, CJ Obassey represents something quieter but enduring as he carries a legendary name; he has resisted imitation, choosing instead to honour his father’s legacy through excellence rather than replication. Guided by love, spirituality, and truth, CJ Obassey is steadily carving a space for himself in Nigerian music, not as an echo of the past, but as a sound shaped by it, and confidently his own, as he works on a 17 track body of work called Sleeping Giant The Album.
