Civil rights group endorses Dullar for UN Ambassador

The Congress of the Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (CHRMA) has formally nominated Abdul-Hamed Salawu, popularly known as Dullar and former Chairman of Somolu Local Government Area, Lagos State, for consideration as a United Nations Development Ambassador in a non-political, non-operational and honorary capacity.

In a letter signed by its Executive Director, Buna Olaitan Isiak and copied to President Bola Tinubu, CHRMA addressed the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SSAP-SDGs), Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, urging her office to endorse the nomination and provide strategic support.

CHRMA clarified that the proposed title would be strictly symbolic and honorary, carrying no executive, statutory, or financial authority on behalf of the United Nations. The designation, the group said, would serve as a platform for goodwill and advocacy, recognising Salawu’s contributions to human rights, inclusive governance, and grassroots development while promoting UN values and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Highlighting his eight-year tenure as Somolu Local Government Chairman (2017–2025), CHRMA described Salawu’s administration as “marked by accountability, transparency, and a strong human-rights-based approach to governance.” The organisation noted that his leadership prioritised equity, participation, and non-discrimination, driving meaningful local development.

Under Salawu, youth and women empowerment programmes flourished, including ICT and vocational training, mentorship initiatives, and targeted economic inclusion schemes for historically underserved groups. In healthcare, his administration reconstructed a dilapidated Primary Health Centre, expanded immunisation and public health outreach, trained personnel, and led community-based COVID-19 response efforts.

CHRMA also praised his contributions to education through the provision of learning materials, school buses, scholarships for indigent students, free UTME and GCE forms, adult education programmes, and support for children with special needs, all designed to ensure equitable access to quality education.

Isiak expressed confidence that, with the backing of the Office of the Senior Special Adviser to the President on SDGs (OSSAP-SDGs), Salawu’s nomination could gain international recognition and underscore Nigeria’s commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals globally.
