Minister of Interior Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has approved the appointment of Mallam Ja’afaru Ahmed, as the new secretary to Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board.

Ahmed will replace the late Mrs Aisha Ahmad Rufai, who was the board’s secretary until her death on March 20, 2023.

The new secretary was born on July 21, 1959, in Jega Local Government of Kebbi State, North West Nigeria.

He attended Nasarawa Primary School, Birnin Kebbi in 1972 where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate. He attended Government Secondary School, Birinin Kebbi where he got his West African Examination Certificate in 1976. He also attended the College of Arts and Science, Sokoto State in 1980.

Later, he proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A) in History in 1984

Ahmed was the former Controller General of Nigeria Correctional Services (NCoS) where he recorded many landmark achievements.

Such achievements include the initiation of the construction of 3,000 capacity Custodial Centres in six geopolitical zones in the country.

The secretary also pioneered the construction of 3,000 capacity ultra-modern Custodial Centre in Jangura, Kano in the North-West zone.

He equally had the same project at Karshi in Federal Capital Territory in North-Central and Bori, Rivers State in the South-South zone.

In a statement, he constructed new cell blocks, renovation, and rehabilitation of barracks, offices, workshops, and other structures across the country; re-opened and rehabilitated 32 satellite Custodial Centres previously shut down due to Boko Haram insurgency activities.

Other achievements are the construction of 14 new satellite Custodial Centres with barracks accommodation in some states, and the construction and subsequent commissioning of an ultra-modern conference centre and the adjoining event centre at the Nigerian Correctional Services ( NCoS) National Headquarters, Abuja.
