The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) and Transparency International Nigeria (TI-Nigeria) have applauded the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee’s decision to investigate the expenditure of all security intervention funds released by the Federal Government since 2020.

The committee, led by Zakaria Nyampa, aims to enforce transparency, accountability, and fiscal discipline in the use of resources meant to safeguard Nigerians and residents. CISLAC/TI-Nigeria expressed hope that the National Assembly will conduct the probe earnestly, reflecting its constitutional oversight duties.

Executive Director of CISLAC and Head of TI-Nigeria, Auwal Ibrahim Musa, said, “This investigation is crucial to exposing the widespread corruption and financial mismanagement hampering Nigeria’s security efforts. For years, we have witnessed alarming levels of diversion and procurement fraud in the Defence and Security sectors.”

He urged, “The probe should be extended to include the opaque ‘Security Vote’ disbursed to State Governments, which has been a major source of corruption and insecurity.”

CISLAC/TI-Nigeria also called for stronger civilian oversight across the Defence and Security governance system to restore efficiency and ethical standards.

Rafsanjani added, “Collaborations with the Ministry of Finance, Budget Office, National Security Adviser’s office, EFCC, ICPC, and civil society groups like ours are vital for a credible process.”

Welcoming the new Security Chiefs’ appointments, the CISLAC/TI-Nigeria boss commended Chief of Defence Staff Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede’s emphasis on personnel welfare. He remarked, “Improving the living conditions and remuneration of our security personnel is key to enhancing operational efficiency and protecting lives.”

The Centre urged the National Assembly to enact reforms targeting procurement, operations, and personnel management. Musa concluded, “We must update laws such as the Freedom of Information Act and Official Secrets Act to enhance transparency and civilian oversight in the security sector.”

CISLAC/TI-Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to fighting corruption and promoting accountability to build a more secure Nigeria.
