Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, has said sustainable governance outcomes in Nigeria can only be achieved in an atmosphere of peace inspired by love, urging citizens to reject violence, hate speech and division as the country celebrates Christmas.

In a Christmas message titled “2025 Xmas: Another Season of Reflection,” Bamidele said peace, rooted in the message of Christ’s love, is a critical condition for effective governance at both national and sub-national levels, as well as for economic growth and national stability.

“We then have the duty to be purveyors of peace and not violence, harmony and not divergence, and good tidings and not hate speech,” the Senate Leader said, stressing that “it is only within this ambience that our nation can attain sustainable development; that our economy can witness exponential growth and that our people can daily pursue their aspirations without let or hindrance.”

Bamidele described Christmas as a season of cautious optimism and reflection, noting that the birth of Jesus Christ offers enduring hope, peace and deliverance in times of despair and global turbulence. He said Christ’s message of love, redemption and salvation remains relevant to Nigeria’s current challenges.

“As we mark Christ’s glorious birth today, this anniversary presents us another season to reflect on the state of our nation and the condition of our compatriots, whether Christians or Muslims,” he said.

The lawmaker cautioned against resorting to violence in the pursuit of personal or collective grievances, urging Nigerians to embrace love as a pathway to peace and unity. According to him, celebrating Christmas should go beyond festivity to a daily commitment to Christ’s teachings.

“Regardless of faith we may profess, Christ’s love offers us an eternal message that binds broken hearts together; that soothes festering sores and that reconciles estranged brothers again,” he said, adding that the message is one of national cohesion, rebirth and stability.

Senator Bamidele added that Christ’s message is universal and timeless, capable of fostering reconciliation during both peace and conflict, and applicable to all Nigerians irrespective of religious affiliation.

He concluded by extending Christmas and early New Year goodwill to Nigerians, expressing hope that peace inspired by love would translate into improved governance outcomes across the country..
