Igwe Denis Okafor, Ezeaniokosisi of Ovuorie, Nkanu East Local Government Area, Enugu State, has commended Governor Peter Mbah on his determination to eradicate illicit drug use in the state and safeguard the lives and properties of the people. He particularly lauded the governor on the inauguration of the Enugu State Drug Control Committee (ESDCC).
Speaking in an interview with Daily Sun shortly after the inauguration of the committee on August 17, 2026, Igwe Okafor said the important and timely initiative, which is aimed at confronting the growing menace of illicit drug abuse and trafficking in the society, would ensure that youths in Enugu would rather channel their talents in the right direction towards legitimate, positive, and production activities. The royal father said the devastating consequences of illicit drug use were evident in many communities, and drug abuse has contributed to youth vulnerability, criminal behaviours, violence, family breakdown, poor academic performance, mental and social problems, and the destruction of the productive potential of many young people.
He said the inauguration of the committee demonstrated the governor’s commitment to protecting the lives, future, and wellbeing of the people of Enugu State.
The Igwe noted that the fight against drug abuse is not merely a law-enforcement responsibility, but also a collective battle that requires government, traditional institutions, religious bodies, parents, schools, communities, security agencies, and civil society organisations to work together.
Speaking further, he said the crusade against drug abuse also places an enormous burden on families, communities, healthcare institutions, and the wider economy.
“Of particular concern is the effect on young people, who represent the future of communities, and allowing them to become trapped in substance abuse means putting the future of our society at risk,” he said.
Furthermore, Igwe Okafor stated that a generation that should be developing its talents, acquiring education and skills, building businesses, and contributing positively to society can, instead, become vulnerable to criminal exploitation and other destructive influences, if serious steps are not taken to nip such nefarious activities in the bud.

“I, therefore, commend Governor Peter Mbah for recognising the seriousness of this challenge and taking concrete steps to address it. I, particularly, encourage the committee to adopt a comprehensive approach that combines prevention, public enlightenment, effective enforcement, rehabilitation, and reintegration of persons struggling with substance abuse.
“Traditional rulers also have a significant role to play. As custodians of culture and community values, we must continue to educate our people, support government programmes and ensure that our communities do not become safe havens for the distribution of illicit drugs. I equally appeal to parents and guardians to pay closer attention to the welfare, associations and wellbeing of their children and wards.” Igwe Okafor said.
He quoted the Bible as saying, “train a child in the way he shall go and when he grows older, he will not depart from it,” therefore, responsible parenting, early intervention and open communication can make a significant difference, he said. He added that the fight must not be approached as a campaign against drug users alone.
Equally, those who profit from the destruction of youths by trafficking and distributing illicit substances must also face the full force of the law, while persons affected by addiction should receive appropriate support and rehabilitation.
“On behalf of myself, the people of Ovuorie in Nkanu East Local Government Area, and the traditional institution I represent, I commend His Excellency, Governor Peter Mbah, for this laudable initiative. We urge the newly inaugurated committee to remain focused, transparent, and community-oriented in the discharge of its responsibilities.
“A drug-free society is a safer society, a healthier society, and a society with a brighter future. May God continue to grant His Excellency the wisdom, courage, and strength to implement programmes that will protect our people and advance the development of Enugu State”.
