Author and global thought leader Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been honored as the first-ever recipient of the prestigious Felix Jud Prize for Defiant Thinking. The award ceremony took place during the 15th annual Harbourfront Literature Festival at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.

The Felix Jud Prize, a new German award, was established to celebrate individuals from the fields of literature, art, and culture who, through their work, champion intellectual freedom, humanity, and debate. Adichie was unanimously selected as the first recipient of the award by a distinguished jury, which included Reinhold Beckmann, Robert Eberhardt, Jonathan Landgrebe, Jo Lendle, Joachim Lux, André Schmitz, Jette Steckel, and Nicola Verstl. A choice that organizers hailed as a perfect embodiment of the prize’s founding values.

The award is inspired by the legacy of Felix Jud, a German bookseller who, in the midst of the Nazi regime, used his bookshop as a quiet hub of intellectual resistance. He defiantly refused to change his name, despite its association with “Jud” (Jew), and openly sold forbidden literature, making his shop a symbol of courageous opposition.

Adichie’s selection for the award further confirms her far-reaching influence, which extends well beyond her acclaimed literary works.

Her voice has resonated globally through her impactful TED talks, and her writing and speeches have inspired a new generation of creatives. Notably, her words have been sampled by global pop icon Beyoncé, and her work continues to inspire designers and artists to explore themes of identity and cultural heritage.

This latest accolade joins a very long list of local, regional, and international honors for the literary icon, including the MacArthur “Genius” Grant, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize. Her recognition in Germany further cements her status as one of the most celebrated and influential voices of this generation.
