President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Türkiye marks a pivotal diplomatic push rather than a standard outing, according his Special Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala.
Speaking to journalists during the visit, Bwala rejected claims of it being routine, pointing to the Turkish government’s invitation as proof of Nigeria’s rising clout under Tinubu’s watch. He tied the warm reception to Tinubu’s past role as ECOWAS leader and Nigeria’s heavyweight status in Africa.

“This is not just another trip. It is a strategic visit, first because it is by invitation of the Turkish government. The President of Nigeria is a person of influence in Africa, and Nigeria itself plays a strong role on the continent. With the breakthroughs we are recording in the economy, security and governance, this visit carries significant weight,” Bwala said.
Formal activities kicked off Tuesday, focusing on defence, security, and economic partnerships, Bwala noted.
Accompanying ministers will join bilateral talks with Turkish peers to ramp up ties in vital areas.
Bwala praised Tinubu’s global diplomacy, spotlighting fresh U.S. outreach after past hurdles and recent UAE successes as signs of Nigeria’s comeback.
He lauded Türkiye’s defence prowess—especially in military hardware suited to Nigeria’s challenges—while recalling Nigeria’s past aid to Türkiye.
Describing the trip as “a meeting of shared interests,” Bwala said both nations gain mutually, with Turkish hosts buzzing with enthusiasm since Tinubu’s arrival.
Specific deals and outcomes will emerge post-visit, he assured, positioning the trip to solidify Nigeria’s foreign policy, enhance defence links, and spark economic wins aligned with the government’s plans.
