Several travellers were killed and others injured on Sunday night after a commercial bus rammed into a Dangote truck that allegedly reversed onto the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Sapade Bridge in Ogun State.

The fatal crash, which occurred at about 8:05 p.m., involved a white Sinotruk (CNHTC) truck and a Toyota Hiace commercial bus, according to the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The FRSC said 18 people were involved in the accident, including 15 adult men, two adult women and one male child. Several passengers died in the collision, six sustained varying degrees of injuries, while two adult male passengers escaped unhurt.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the crash was triggered after the truck driver allegedly attempted to reverse onto the expressway on discovering he had missed his route. The FRSC said the commercial bus, which was travelling at high speed, could not avoid the obstruction despite an attempt by the driver to manoeuvre through the limited space, resulting in a devastating impact.

The collision left the bus extensively damaged and trapped several occupants inside. Rescue teams from the FRSC responded to the scene, evacuated the injured to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for treatment, and recovered the bodies of the deceased, which were deposited at the FOS Mortuary, Ipara. The Nigeria Police Force, Ishara Division, took custody of the accident scene and the wrecked vehicles for further investigation.

Reacting to the incident, Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, described the crash as avoidable and urged motorists to exercise greater caution on the highways.

He warned truck drivers against reversing on expressways after missing their exits, stressing that such actions pose a grave danger to other road users.

Ogunjobi also advised commercial drivers to avoid speeding and dangerous overtaking, urging all motorists to obey traffic regulations and use designated turning points whenever they miss their routes.

The latest accident adds to the growing number of fatal crashes recorded on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, underscoring renewed concerns over reckless driving and poor adherence to road safety regulations.
