President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered independent investigation to unravel the true circumstances surrounding the death of Miss Ifedolapo Oladepo, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, who died in Kano State, last week.
On December 1, another First Class graduate of Petroleum Engineering from the University of Uyo, Mr. Ukeme Monday, died in Zamfara State orientation camp of yet-to-be-ascertained causes.
Another corps member, Chinyerum Nwenenda Elechi, died in the Bayelsa State orientation camp.
Oladepo, a First Class graduate of Transport Management, from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, Oyo State, died at the orientation camp in Kano, over what her family alleged was negligence on the part of NYSC management.
But, NYSC authorities claimed the lady died of kidney failure, following complications from a urinary tract infection.
Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, in a statement, said the president commiserated with the families of the three NYSC members who died during the 2016 Batch ‘B’ Orientation Programme in three states of the Federation.
Adesina said the president described “the demise of these young Nigerians as shocking, sad and unfortunate,” regretting that “they died in the course of answering the national call to serve.”
Buhari urged the families, friends and associates of the deceased to be consoled by the knowledge that their loved ones paid the supreme price while on national service and not for ignoble reasons.
President Buhari also extended condolences to the Director-General and Management of the NYSC over the transition of the youth corps members.
“While enjoining the Management to do all within its powers to protect the lives of those under its charge, the President calls on parents and guardians of current and potential NYSC participants not to panic over the recent tragic deaths.
“On Oladepo’s death in Kano State, president Buhari has ordered an independent investigation to unravel the true circumstances”, the statement added.
