PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has described the decision by the outgoing President of Gambia, Alhaji Yahya Jammeh, to concede defeat in the December 1 elections as an uncommon sportsmanship.
He said Jammeh’s action was crucial in calming fears of unrest in the West African sub region. In a congratulatory message to the President-elect, Adama Barrow, Buhari expressed delight at the gallantry shown by Jammeh, and enjoined Barrow to be magnanimous in victory.
In a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, President Buhari also commended the Gambians for peacefully exercising their democratic right to freely choose their leader and called on all stakeholders to maintain the peace. He added that the President would look forward to seeing a smooth transition of power, while also assuring of continued cordial relationship with the incoming administration in the best interest of both countries.
