  • 17 Nigerian Army Members Recognized Posthumously for Sacrifice in Delta State Incident

In a solemn ceremony held at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu paid tribute to 17 members of the Nigerian Army who lost their lives in the line of duty in Delta State on March 14, 2024.

The president, acknowledging their ultimate sacrifice, posthumously conferred national honors on the fallen soldiers, underscoring their dedication to serving the nation.

During the burial ceremony, President Tinubu announced significant measures aimed at supporting the families of the deceased soldiers. Notably, he declared the provision of housing facilities for surviving family members and pledged scholarships for all children of the fallen soldiers, extending up to university level education. In a move to provide immediate assistance, he directed the prompt payment of death benefits to the families, ensuring financial support within 90 days.

Among the honorees, Lt. Col. A.H Ali, Maj S.D Shafa, Maj D.E Obi, and Capt U Zakari were posthumously awarded the national honor of Member of the Order of the Niger, recognizing their exemplary service and sacrifice. Additionally, other soldiers received the Officer of the Order of the Niger honor, commemorating their contributions to the nation’s defense.

President Tinubu’s gestures underscored the government’s commitment to honoring and supporting its servicemen and their families, particularly in times of loss and hardship. The announcement of scholarships and benefits reflects a recognition of the enduring impact of the soldiers’ sacrifice and aims to provide tangible support to their loved ones as they navigate the aftermath of their loss.
