The Senate on Tuesday cautioned Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde, urging him to desist from politicising the abduction and subsequent rescue of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

The warning came after the Red Chamber adopted an additional motion moved by Senator Adams Oshiomhole during plenary presided over by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin.

In the additional prayer, which was seconded and unanimously adopted by senators, the Senate commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for the successful rescue of the abducted victims, but cautioned Governor Makinde against what it described as politicising and trivialising the Federal Government’s efforts.

Specifically, the Senate urged the Oyo governor to desist from calling on the United Nations and other international human rights and accountability bodies to examine the circumstances surrounding the abduction of the schoolchildren and teachers, insisting that such actions undermine the sacrifices and professionalism displayed by the nation’s security agencies during the rescue mission.

The Senate subsequently adopted the substantive motion sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, commending President Tinubu for his decisive leadership and strategic directives that led to the successful rescue of the victims after more than 50 days in captivity.

The upper chamber also praised the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, intelligence agencies and other security operatives for the intelligence-driven operation, which led to the rescue of the victims, the arrest of eight suspected terrorists and the neutralisation of several others.

In its resolutions, the Senate paid glowing tribute to Lieutenant F.A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa and Sergeant Abena John Jerome, who lost their lives during the operation, observed a minute’s silence in their honour, and urged the Federal Government to promptly pay all benefits and entitlements due to their families.

The Senate further called on the Federal Government to intensify military and intelligence operations against terrorists, kidnappers and other criminal elements across the country while reaffirming its support for President Tinubu’s efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.
