Sebastien Haller emerged as the hero once again in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, sealing Ivory Coast’s remarkable comeback victory over Nigeria.
His crucial goal, a deft flick from Simon Adingra’s cross, secured the title for the Elephants on home turf, adding to the significance of the moment given his return from testicular cancer.
The match began with Nigeria taking the lead through William Troost-Ekong’s header from a corner late in the first half. However, Ivory Coast rallied in the second half, with Franck Kessie equalizing from yet another corner delivered by Adingra.
Despite facing early setbacks, including the departure of their coach Jean-Louis Gasset, Ivory Coast showed resilience and determination throughout the knockout stages. Interim coach Emerse Fae played a pivotal role in guiding the team to dramatic victories over formidable opponents like Senegal and Mali.
The triumph not only secured Ivory Coast’s third Africa Cup of Nations title but also marked a historic moment as they became the first host nation since 2006 to claim the trophy. The significance of the win was underscored by the substantial investment made in hosting the tournament and improving infrastructure in the country, with Ivorian President Alassane Outtara joining in the jubilant post-match celebrations.
In terms of prize money, Ivory Coast received $7 million, while Nigeria was awarded $4 million by the Confederation of African Football. Despite Nigeria’s impressive tournament performance, including an earlier victory over Ivory Coast in the group stage, they faltered in the final showdown, unable to withstand the Elephants’ determined resurgence.
