The Benue State House of Assembly, on Monday, suspended four of its members for unruly behaviour and for allegedly constituting a clog in the way of the smooth running of the legislative business of the House.
The suspended members are Douglas Akya representing Makurdi South State Constituency, Anthony Agom representing Okpokwu, Cephas Dyako of Konshisha state Constituency and Solomon Gyila representing Gwer West state constituency.
Their suspension followed a motion by the majority leader, Saater Tiseer which was seconded by the Majority Chief whip, Hon. Peter Ipusu.
The majority, Saater Tiseer, leader during an emergency plenary, moved a motion for the suspension of the lawmakers saying they constituted themselves to disrupt the smooth legislative activities.
The motion was seconded by member representing Katsina- Ala West, Hon. Peter Ipusu, who said the action is to serve as a warning to those who will want to distract the assembly unnecessarily.
Ruling, the Speaker of the House, Hon Hyacinth Dajoh, said the members stand suspended for three months.
The House which sat with only 11 members out of 31, also screened and confirmed the caretaker committees for 21 out of the 23 Local Government Councils, with exception of Oju and Agatu which was stood down.
Many members, majority from a breakaway group known as G-22 boycotted the Monday sitting while the house adjourned to tomorrow, 5th December 2023 for legislative business.
Speaking to newsmen after the sitting, the Majority Leader, Hon. Saater Tiseer, said “The executive session was successful and we tried to resolve a lot of issues that we were supposed to discuss so we don’t have controversies.
“But we have some of these members, they call it G22 led by Douglas Akya, they held the house for 2 hours. We waited for 2 hours and it became an embarrassment and we felt that they were up to sabotage not just to this house but to the very important items that we were supposed to attend to in this sitting.
“So we decided that they are a clog in the wheel of progress and we will uproot them to show example that we are not here for a joke but for serious business and the business is to move Benue state forward,” he said
