Borno, UNICEF target 3,200 persona for skills acquisition training

United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Borno State government have concluded plans to train 3,200 persons in various skills at vocational centres for boys, girls and adolescents that missed the learning process.

UNICEF Chief of Borno Field Office, Phuong Nguyen, in an address at the matriculation ceremony of 1,000 first batch of the trainees in Maiduguri,yesterday, said the training programme focuses on skills and learning development for youths and adolescents,

“The programme is skills development intervention, focusing on supporting transferable and employable skills development of youths/adolescents,” she said.

Represented by the Fund Education Specialist, Tukur Labbo-Yabo, Nguyen said the 1,000 participants will undergo the training within three months. She said UNICEF is collaborating with the Nigerian government to execute the project in Borno and North West Zamfara State.

She said the project, tagged: Safe Inclusive Learning and Skills For All (SILSA), is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide opportunity to young people who could not access education for various challenges.

According to her, the training will receive skills in tailoring and fashion designing, shoe-making, tie and dye, barbing and hair-style, welding, leather work and electrical installation.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Ya’Karu Mustapha, who represented the commissioner, urged the trainees to concentrate on their learning.

She said the trainees will be split into different trades of their choices. She also announced the government’s plan to provide them with transport allowance and start-up kits upon the completion of their training.
