The biggest risk in BMW’s history has paid off, with the all-new iX3 EV winning the 2026 World Car of the Year award at the New York International Auto Show on Saturday.
Forbes reports that the high-investment iX3 is the first production car off BMW’s Neue Klasse electronic and chassis architecture and will quickly be followed by the i3 (an EV version of the 3 Series) and the next generation X5.
The most advanced BMW on sale today, the iX3 drew praise from judges for its powertrain, precise and enjoyable handling, its efficiency and its sustainability, which is next-level compared to the market average.
Parts of the Neue Klasse technology suite will find their way into at least 40 BMW models over the next year, with head of the Neue Klasse, Mike Reichelt, confirming the infotainment system will be a core of the technology.
“We are delighted by this result for the BMW iX3, the first production model of the Neue Klasse,” he said.
“The iX3 marks the beginning of a new era for BMW in terms of design language, range and charging performance, driver assistance systems, and the user experience with the first-ever BMW Panoramic iDrive.
“Above all, the iX3 stands for the next generation of sheer driving pleasure, powered by the Heart of Joy. (computer-controlled handling system). With 40 new or updated models coming in the next year, the innovations of the Neue Klasse will benefit our entire product portfolio,” Reichelt explained.
The Neue Klasse technology suite, ranging from its sixth-generation electric powertrains and batteries to its all-encompassing infotainment systems to its four-brain control systems, will next appear in the all-new i3 EV, designed from the ground up to be BMW’s 3 Series-equivalent EV.
The win is BMW’s second overall, after the 3 Series car won in 2006, while its iX electric SUV also made it into the final three last year.
Elevating itself beyond the two other finalists, the Hyundai Palisade and the Nissan Leaf, the iX3 also won the coveted World Electric Vehicle award for 2026 (ahead of the Leaf and the Mercedes-Benz CLA), taking BMW’s tally of World Car awards to 11.
The World Car of the Year awards are judged in a secret ballot, tabulated by KMPG, by 98 international automotive journalists from 33 countries.
Eligible vehicles have to meet production runs of at least 10,000 cars a year, priced below the luxury level in their main market and must be sold in at least two major markets on two continents.
Hyundai didn’t leave the World Car of the Year awards empty handed, with the Ioniq 6 N taking out the World Performance Car trophy from the BMW M2 CS and the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray.
A Chinese brand won its category for the first time in WCOTY history, too, with the Nio Firefly claiming the World Urban Car award ahead of the Baojun Yep Plus / Chevrolet Spark Electric and the Hyundai Venue.
There was an American win in 2026, with the Lucid Gravity claiming the World Luxury award, ahead of the Cadillac Vistiq and the Volvo ES90.
The Swedish SUV fell short in the World Design award, too, joining the Kia PV5 on the podium spots behind the Mazda 6e / EZ-6
