Blame political class if 2027 elections falter – Itodo

Samson Itodo, Executive Director of Yiaga Africa

By Lawrence Agbo

The Executive Director of YIAGA Africa, Samson Itodo, has said the political class should be blamed if anything goes wrong with Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Arise Television on Monday morning, Itodo alleged that a section of the political elite appears determined to undermine the electoral process and deliberately create confusion as a strategy for gaining political advantage.

According to him, the ongoing controversies surrounding proposed amendments to electoral laws are not driven by public interest but by partisan calculations.

“It’s clear a section of the political class wants to undermine the electoral process and create confusion as a strategy for gaining power,” he said.

“If public interest was prioritised over partisanship, Nigeria wouldn’t be in this situation regarding electoral reform.”

Itodo warned that weakening electoral safeguards or introducing uncertainty into the legal framework ahead of the 2027 elections could erode public confidence in the democratic process.

He stressed that reforms should strengthen transparency, institutional independence, and legal clarity rather than serve narrow political interests.
