Vice-Chancellor, Bingham University, Abuja, Prof. Haruna Ayuba Kuje, has disclosed that the usage of android phones, truancy, indecent dressing and other social vices strongly prohibited in the university.

He stated this at the 21st matriculation ceremony of university held at the University campus, where 1,805 new students were admitted across 15 Faculties, 63 Departments and 48 academic programmes of the university.

In his speech, the VC informed the students that the matriculation ceremony marks their formal admission into the institution, and provides a platform for the university to promote its vision, mission, culture, values, and traditions.

The VC reminded the students that Bingham University is a world-class conventional university in a Christ-centered environment, and the mission is to produce graduates that have both knowledge and skills for self-reliance and in the fear of Christ.

“By taking the matriculation oath, you have formally joined a community of men and women that are seeking knowledge in the fear of Christ and desire to be change-agents in the marketplace,” he said.

The VC highlighted the rules and regulations the new students must abide to have a successful time in the school, and avoid attracting sanctions and wrath of the school.

He said: “As a student in this school, ensure that you pay your school fees promptly to avoid being evicted from the examination hall during examinations; know the vision, mission, motto, symbols and what they stand for, anthem, laws, code of conduct for dressing, use of phones, study the students’ handbook, etc. Ignorance is no excuse.

“Class and chapel attendance is mandatory if you want to get a degree at the end of your stay in Bingham University. Chapel hours are on Mondays and Wednesdays (12-1pm) and Sunday Services (7.30am), and are mandatory for all students. Make sure you are not caught elsewhere during those hours.

“Be security conscious. If you see something, say something. There are security call numbers displayed in strategic places of the University. Do not hesitate to call the numbers if you or someone is in distress. We also have surveillance system in place. If you are caught breaking the law or destroying University property, you will be sent packing from the University. We expect you to imbibe biblical virtues of Love for God, Love for your neighbor, kindness, accountability, honesty, integrity, respect for staff and fellow students.

“We also expect you to keep our campus clean; have good maintenance culture; bring out your talents and expertise to improve the profile of your university; think of ways to improve the facilities on campus; and keep and maintain our green areas.”

He further warned that Bingham University has zero tolerance for unethical conduct which include examination malpractices, assault, bullying, sexual harassment, drugs, cultism and all forms of crimes and criminality; avoid bad company, destruction of critical infrastructure, riot of any kind.

“As you navigate your academic journey, you may face some challenges and uncertainties. But do not worry. Our university has a robust support system in place to help you succeed. From Chaplains to staff advisors to positive behaviour committee to counselling services, we are committed to providing you with the resources you need to thrive.

“On the part of Management, we will ensure we provide an enabling learning environment for you while you study in Bingham University. We are committed to building more hostels, upgrading the Library and the ICT centre, providing sports and recreational facilities as well as provision of classrooms and lecture halls despite the limitation of funds,” the VC promised.

The guest lecturer, Dr. Chibuzor Samuel-son, who spoke on “leveraging legacies for limitless impact” informed the new students that they have officially inherit the mantle of Bingham University and become part of the wider community associated with Bingham University.

He informed the new students and parents that he was one of the pioneer students of Bingham, recalling with nostalgia the role the school played in shaping his medical career and life in general.

“I have said to you that you have inherited the mantle of Bingham University, you have inherited a good name. It is your responsibility to leverage the name and the legacy that Bingham University has created over the years to make something great out of your own life, and when the time comes to make an impact on society. I tell you, when you graduate and get into the wider world, when you tell people that you graduated from Bingham University, it will open great doors for you.

“A few weeks ago, my sister-in-law told me a story. My sister-in-law (who is my wife’s younger sister) is also a medical doctor who graduated from another medical school, which I shall not name (a great medical school by the way). She went looking for a job in a hospital. And one of the first questions the interviewer asked her was if she had trained at Bingham University. She said no, and she asked him why he asked the question.

“The interviewer told her point blank that he wished she were a product of Bingham University because he had heard that Bingham University doctors were some of the best in the market. True story. This is the legacy that has been created for you to leverage. A legacy of excellence, a legacy of being one of the best products in the market, a legacy of greatness.

“For you to leverage this legacy, you must become a person of substance. To become a person of substance while going through this university, you must have faith. Faith in God, faith in yourself and faith in the system. To become a person of substance, you must work hard, remain focused and never give up,” he advised.

Registrar of the University, Mr. Daburi Bello Misal, administered the oath to the students, and urged them to ensure they abide the rules as violation could attract sanctions which could include outright expulsion or severe sanctions.
