Be filled with the Holy Spirit is one of the commands given to the believers. Ephesians 5:18 says: And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.
This is Paul’s command by the Holy Spirit to every believer that we should be filled with the Holy Spirit. In many places in the bible the importance of being filled with the Holy Spirit is rendered again and again. If we are going to make a success and also prosper as Christians, we must be people who are living in the Spirit of the Almighty God and not carnally. Paul stated this command emphatically in his epistle to the Romans.
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace (Romans 8:5-6).
The Promise of the Holy Spirit
God Himself promised long ago in the book of Joel that in the last days He will pour His Spirit upon all flesh. He knows that we need Him to function successfully in this Christian journey. When Jesus Christ rose from the dead He took time to instruct the disciples not to go out of Jerusalem but to wait for this promise of the Father. The Lord Jesus knows that without the Holy Spirit power the disciples will make a wreck of their Christian journey and also the Ministry. And that will be a great disappointment to heaven. Therefore, He instructed them to wait. And thank God that they all waited in the upper room, praying until they received the power from on high.
The Fulfilment of the Promise.
This promise made by God in the book of Joel was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost. This experience became a huge transformation in their lives. The boldness, the courage and the enablement to witness for Him became instantly evidenced in their lives. The receiving of the baptism of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost marked the beginning of the explosive witnessing that gave rise to the Acts of Apostles. The disciples did not only receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit and stop there, but they went up constantly by way of prayer to get refilled from time to time. This is also important and instructive to us today.
Paul in our reference scripture admonished believers, in comparison with a drunkard who is under the influence of wine that we should be people who are moved by the Holy Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit is our power, our seal and our Comforter. He was sent to guide us. He is the one who is able to empower us to make a success in our Christian lives and to walk the way that will bring glory to the Almighty God.
Holy Spirit is the anchor for Exploits.
Everyone in the bible who did great exploits for God has been somebody who was at one time on the other anointed by the power of the Holy Spirit. Beginning from the book of Judges we see persons like Samson, Deborah to Saul, David and all the prophets in the Old Testament. They did great exploits by the power of the Holy Spirit. And when we come to the New Testament, we see Peter, Paul, Stephen, Philip and all the apostles were people anointed by the Holy Spirit. Even our Lord Jesus Christ, the Bible says:
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him (Acts 10:38).
They all had excellent Christian life and ministry by the power of the Holy Spirit.
A Major Condition for receiving the Holy Spirit.
Obedient to the word of God is one of the prerequisites to receiving the Holy Spirit. When the Lord Jesus instructed His disciples to wait in Jerusalem, He didn’t tell them how long they will wait, but they obeyed. When we read and study the word of God, and obey it, then the Holy Spirit will fill our lives over and over again.
And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him, (Acts 5:32).
Conclusion.
My prayer and my desire is that every believer will be filled with the Holy Spirit, directed by the Holy Spirit and enjoy His sweet fellowship at all times in Jesus name.
