The Bayelsa State Government has summoned an emergency meeting following reports of incessant attacks by suspected herdsmen across the state.

Several communities in Sagbama, Southern Ijaw, Ogbia, Kolokuma/Opokuma and Yenagoa have cried out over the destruction of farmlands and attacks on farmers in the state.

The latest incident was in Okutukutu community in Yenagoa Local Government Area, which prompted several women of the community to protest the rape of an elderly woman by suspected herders.

The women had urged the state government to act fast and salvage the situation before breakdown of law and order.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Mrs. Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai disclosed that the meeting to be presided over by the deputy governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo is to deliberate on the upsurge of unwholesome activities of Fulani herdsmen in many communities across the state.

According to her, those expected at the meeting from Sagbama, Ekeremor, Yenagoa, Southern Ijaw, Ogbia and Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Areas are first class traditional rulers from the communities and chairmen of community development committees, youth and women leaders.

The governor, Senator Douye Diri had signed the anti-grazing law in 2021 and had followed it up with the establishment of a livestock task force to enforce the law.

However, the enforcement of the law has been ineffective due to the rampant cases of herdsmen attacks across the state.
