Banditry: Kebbi sensitises school Principals on proactive security measures

Kebbi State Government has carried out sensitization workshops on “Safe Schools Initiative” for principal of Secondary Schools and Colleges as schools reopen for academic activities.

The action comes aftermath of the abduction of students of the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School Maga in November last year who subsequently regained freedom.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Halima Muhammad Bande, said Governor Nasir Idris directed the conduct of security awareness for principals and other staff to forestall a recurrence of the ugly incident.

Earlier sessions were held in Zuru, Yauri, Jega, Bunza and Argungu before the final lap in Birnin Kebbi.

Bande made it clear that Principals, Vice-Principals, Staff and Students, have a crucial role to play in the maintenance of schools security.

According to her,” We must not allow our collective psyche for peaceful living to be taken away by bandits. This is the essence of these fora to ensure smooth running of schools by being security conscious for conducive learning environment”,

“I’m also urging schools to relate with understanding with their host communities because they are active stakeholders in the general security architecture of peculiar locations”,

“Furthermore, Principals should utilize the professionalism of security agencies through regular contact for advice on all security matters of schools for proactive measures and in case of any eventuality”,

“We sincerely appreciate our amenable Governor Nasir Idris for ordering the deployment of security personnel to schools to maintain vigilance and strengthen the confidence of teachers and students to pursue their academic activities peacefully, which is our major objective”, Bande said.

She commended the Police, Civil Defence and the DSS, for enlightening the principals about the rudiments of security awareness as well as other proactive and protective measures for schools safety.

Bande affirmed that confidence has been restored to the parents and students of Maga Girls School, through counseling and full deployment of security personnel to restart academic activities.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Operations, Kebbi Command, Yakubu Lawal Gumi, advised principals not to give access to criminals through negligence.

“You must always manage your schools with security consciousness”,

“There should be adequate lighting in your schools because criminals detest exposure, this is important, remain alert about suspicious characters”, the ACP advised

The Deputy Commandant, Civil Defence, Wale Henry, decried the porous nature of some schools, saying proper fencing is necessary.

“Pillars of security entail proper fencing, vigilance and highly intelligent persons to man the entrance gate”,

“Principals and teachers must also be alert to internal security, I served in Cross River where I saw many students initiated into cultism”,

“Strict monitoring is essential to safeguard students from outside influence into criminality”,

“This “Mom and daughter” phenomenon among students often leads girls being initiated into lesbianism while homosexuality can be found among boys, usually beginning with indecent touch”,

“Criminals have the penchant of ‘catch them young’, these immoral acts are manifest among students, we’ve seen how boys are trying to behave like girls, while girls are trying to become males”,

“Principals must tackle internal security challenges as antidote to external misdemeanor”, the dep. Commandant warned.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, rtd. Colonel Danladi Hassan Ribah, said the order by Governor Nasir Idris, to secure Schools’ environment in all parts of Kebbi, have been implemented.

“These gatherings of principals to induct them on security tips is the consolidation of attaining conducive learning environment in schools.

On the deboarding of some boarding schools, Col. Ribah, told Journalists that a committee has submitted its report, awaiting the final word of Gov. Idris.
