Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has assured internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Bagudo Local Government Area of the government’s commitment to strengthening security in their communities and other parts of the state.

Idris gave the assurance while addressing the displaced persons in Bagudo on his way to Kaoje, where he was scheduled to commiserate with the people over the killing of the village head of Lafagu, Alhaji Saidu Mujeli, and recent attacks allegedly carried out by heavily armed vigilantes, known as Yanbanga, from neighbouring Niger State.

The governor said his administration was deeply concerned about the security situation and would take additional measures to protect lives and properties and restore confidence among affected communities.

“I want to assure you that the State Government will take additional security measures to improve security in your communities and other parts of the state. We will not allow our people to continue living in fear or being displaced from their homes,” Idris stated.

The governor expressed deep sadness over the condition of the displaced persons, describing their situation as painful and unacceptable, particularly as innocent citizens had been forced to abandon their homes and means of livelihood because of attacks. He stressed that the state government would not condone acts of brutality, violence or destruction of communities, assuring the people that every necessary measure would be taken, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, to strengthen security and prevent further attacks.

Idris also appealed to the displaced persons and other residents of the affected communities not to take the law into their own hands.

He urged them to remain calm and allow the government and security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crisis and ensure that those responsible were brought to justice.

The governor further assured the victims that the state government would facilitate the timely provision of relief materials, including food and other essential supplies, to alleviate their hardship.

He said efforts would also continue towards restoring normalcy and creating the conditions necessary for the displaced persons to return to their communities.

Idris called on traditional rulers, community leaders, political leaders, well-meaning individuals and other stakeholders to complement government efforts by providing support and assistance to those affected by the crisis.

Responding, representatives of the IDPs thanked the governor for visiting them and demonstrating concern for their plight.

They expressed appreciation for the government’s intervention and assured Idris that they would remain calm and refrain from taking retaliatory action.
