The 2026 Basketball Africa League (BAL) season has delivered a series of record-breaking milestones, highlighting the competition’s growing popularity and impact across the continent.
The BAL Playoffs tipped off on May 22 at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda, with eight teams battling for continental supremacy. The competition will conclude with the BAL Finals on May 31.
Teams competing in the playoffs include Al Ahly of Egypt, Al Ahly Ly of Libya, ASC Ville de Dakar of Senegal, Club Africain of Tunisia, Dar City of Tanzania, FUS Rabat of Morocco, defending champions Petro de Luanda of Angola, and hosts RSSB Tigers of Rwanda.
According to statistics released by the league, BAL’s social media platforms generated more than 722 million views during the 2026 season, setting a new record for the group phase.
The league also recorded a significant increase in digital engagement, with games generating a 1,000 per cent year-on-year rise in total watch time across BAL.NBA.com and the NBA App. BAL matches were broadcast to fans in 214 countries and territories, including all 54 African nations.
Attendance figures also reached new heights, with nearly 75,000 spectators attending the Kalahari and Sahara Conference group-stage games held in South Africa and Morocco respectively.
On the court, several records were rewritten. Petro de Luanda captain Childe Dundão became the BAL’s all-time leader in minutes played, surpassing 1,073 minutes across six seasons. The Angolan side also featured in the league’s 200th game when they defeated Nairobi City Thunder 97-70 on April 1.
RSSB Tigers guard Craig Randall II set a new BAL scoring record after pouring in 54 points against Dar City on April 4, while Al Ahly Ly and Dar City combined for a record 215 points in a high-scoring contest won 118-97 by the Libyan side.
The playoffs have also attracted some of Africa’s finest basketball talent. Thirty players who featured at the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket are taking part in the postseason, while 11 of the 16 national teams that competed at the tournament are represented by at least one player.
A record eight former NBA players participated in the BAL this season, including Damion Baugh, Donovan Williams, Michael Foster Jr., Mangok Mathiang, Kevin Murphy, Chasson Randle, Hasheem Thabeet and Axel Toupane. Toupane made history as the first NBA champion to feature in the BAL, having won the 2021 NBA title with the Milwaukee Bucks.
The league also celebrated consistency and longevity, with five players competing in all six BAL seasons: Abdoulaye Harouna, Ater Majok, Gerson Domingos, Childe Dundão and Solo Diabate.
Among other notable achievements, Al Ahly Ly’s Damion Baugh became the first player in league history to record a triple-double in his debut BAL season, while Al Ahly’s victory over FUS Rabat on May 3 produced only the second double-overtime game in BAL history.
The 2026 season has also enjoyed strong commercial backing, with a record 22 marketing, merchandising and institutional partners supporting the league, further underlining the BAL’s rapid growth as one of Africa’s premier sporting competitions.
