Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru, has resigned his position with immediate effect, citing health reasons. His exit was conveyed in a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Tinubu.
Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development on Monday, noting that Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed gratitude for Badaru’s “services to the nation.” According to Onanuga, “President Tinubu will likely inform the senate of Badaru’s successor later this week.”
Badaru, 63, served two terms as governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before joining Tinubu’s cabinet on August 21, 2023.
His sudden departure comes at a sensitive moment, following Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency. The president is expected to outline the full scope of the security overhaul in the coming days.
The resignation also coincides with a meeting earlier on Monday between Tinubu and former Chief of Defence Staff Christopher Musa at the State House.
The engagement, Daily Sun learnt, is part of consultations ahead of a major shake-up in the nation’s security architecture, as the administration responds to rising insecurity across the country.
