In recent years, there have been a lot of meaningful cracks in the glass ceiling. An exclusive list of Nigeria’s female investors is becoming courageous and gutsy enough to pin their hopes —and a huge portion of their assets— on new ideas that might become successful. It is not by accident that Dr Awele Vivien Elumelu sits atop the list of these leading wealthiest female investors on the Nigerian Exchange. The resume is rich with a decorated career spanning decades.

Awele —who recently clocked 55— is a successful medical practitioner. She holds an MBBS from the University of Benin and has practiced in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom. She later completed executive education at Harvard Business School, IMD Switzerland, and the London School of Economics.

Awele is the founder of Avon Healthcare Limited, a leading health maintenance organization in Nigeria, and CEO of Avon Medical Practice, a network of hospitals and clinics. As a distinguished medical professional, she is an active advocate for global health and social impact.

Her husband, Tony O. Elumelu, is a billionaire financier and founder of Heirs Holdings, which has interests in financial services, power, energy, real estate, hospitality, healthcare and technology. Since acquiring a controlling interest in Transcorp Plc in 2011, they have overseen the conglomerate’s expansion into various sectors while reshaping the economy of Nigeria and across the continent. Together, the couple are building a formidable legacy in business and philanthropy. They share a relationship that exemplifies love, partnership, and shared purpose. Their marriage, which has lasted over three decades, is built on mutual respect and a common vision for empowering others. Over the years, they have built not just a strong family but also empires, supporting each other’s ambitions while raising seven children together.

In addition to her healthcare ventures and as a founding director of Heirs Holdings, Awele holds a significant 5.1 per cent stake in Transcorp Plc valued at roughly ₦87 billion. She presently chairs Heirs Insurance Brokers. This combination of executive leadership and substantial equity underscores her growing influence in Nigeria’s traditionally male-dominated corporate sector.

Recently, this seasoned healthcare executive was appointed to chair the board of Transcorp Hotels Plc, a leading name in the country’s hospitality sector. The appointment —effective January 1, 2026— marks a significant milestone in her career, elevating her to the helm of a business renowned for luxury, innovation, and international acclaim.

Outside of her professional and advocacy work, Awele is an avid marathoner and with the new role to head the board of Nigeria’s leading public quoted hospitality brand, this star stock-picker and a holder of the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic, OFR, is set to reaffirm her new identity plate as Nigeria’s leading corporate amazon.
