The Alaigbo Development Foundation (ADF) has cautioned against hasty generalisations and any action outside the bounds of the law while addressing issues bordering on the recent killing of soldiers in Aba , Abia State.
ADF in a statement signed by its President Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie condemned the callous shooting and killing of Soldiers in Aba, Abia state expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the five gallant soldiers who lost their lives in the tragic incident that occurred in Aba on May 30, 2024. Our
“Our hearts go out to those affected by this senseless act of violence” it said.
ADF noted that as an organization committed to peace, development, and justice in the Igbo-speaking regions of Nigeria, the group vehemently condemns any act of violence that disrupts the peace and security of communities.
It said the loss of these brave servicemen is a painful reminder of the sacrifices made by the armed forces in their duty to protect the nation.
“We pray for the repose of the souls of these fallen heroes and extend our support to their families during this difficult time. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten, and we honour their commitment to safeguarding our nation’s integrity”
The group however said it was very important to also address the dangerous tendency of labeling groups without due process.
It said while the ADF acknowledges the existence of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and their call for the remembrance of all that lost their lives in the civil war and various cases of extrajudicial killings in recent times, the ADF do not see how such position translates to killing of innocent people.
“We caution against hasty generalisations. Labelling an entire group based on the actions of a few individuals yet unknown, can lead to further polarisation and escalation of the conflict.
“In Igbo culture, we hold life in high esteem and believe in the principles of “live and let live.” It is essential that we approach this tragedy with a commitment to justice and fairness. A thorough investigation should and must be put in place to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of this crime”.
“Recently, a viral message purported to be from the Army’s leadership has circulated, promising decisive action against those perceived to support terrorism. We urge caution in interpreting this message. However, we hope that this is not another ploy to turn Abia state into a killing field, as witnessed in another state”.
The group expressed worries that no thorough investigation has been conducted, yet fingers are already pointing in the direction of IPOB.
“The ADF calls for an impartial inquiry to identify the actual perpetrators responsible for this heinous crime. We demand that law enforcement agencies adhere strictly to legal procedures and avoid any actions outside the bounds of the law. Abia state has been making significant developmental strides despite the challenging national situation. We hope that this incident is not part of a plot to destabilize the state”
The statement noted that ADF stands firm in advocating for justice, transparency and rule of law
