ASUU insists on renegotiation of 2009 agreement with FG

From Desmond Mgboh, Kano

The Kano xone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on Wednesday, insisted on the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement with the Federal Government as a condition to avert industrial disharmony.

Speaking at a press conference in Kano ASUU’s Zonal Coordinator, Abdulkadir Muhammad, stressed that the union has been without a signed renegotiated agreement with the Government since 2009 when a dollar exchanged for N146.7 as against the current exchange rate of about N1,900.

He insisted that the federal government has been insensitive to the problems bedevilling the Nigerian university system.

According to him,” In Nigeria and public universities members of ASUU are increasingly running out of patience due to government’ s continued refusal to honour the terms of these agreements “

He appealed to the Federal and State Governments to settle all outstanding issues in the Nimi Briggs agreement and memorandum.

He called the attention to the plights of university lecturers and the general conditions of teaching and learning in the university while urging the media, civil society, labour movements and student groups to support its struggle to reposition public universities in the country.
