The Nigerian Army has declared commitment to implementing programmes aimed at ensuring its personnel progress in their chosen career.

The Commander, Training and Doctrine Command, Nigerian Army Headquarters, Major General Kevin Aligbe, stated this when he addressed Members of Directing Staff and candidates for the Captain-Major Practical Promotion Examination 2025 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Sunday, October 5, 2025.

Major General Aligbe congratulated the candidates for the opportunity they have for qualifying for the promotional examination which signifies another step in consolidating their chosen career.

He said: “As you are aware, the Captain-Major Practical Promotion Examination is a critical prerequisite for selection of officers to attend the Junior Staff Course at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, or any of the subscribed Staff Colleges overseas.”

He charged them to note that passing the examination is of utmost importance and requires no further emphasis, stressing that their performance would be a key determinant of their progress in the Nigerian Army.

The commander assured the officers that it is possible for them to pass the examination without resorting to any form of illegal or fraudulent practices.

He continued: “It is, therefore, imperative that you approach it with seriousness, determination and focus to achieve the best possible results.

I also wish to reassure you of the absolute integrity and professionalism of the members of Directing Staff.

Any hard-working and diligent candidate amongst you has nothing to fear. You must know that this exercise goes beyond being a mere examination.

It is an assessment of your current level of proficiency and a measure of your capacity to undertake higher responsibilities both now and in your future endeavours.

Fortunately, you are well trained and most of you have gained valuable operational experiences in various theatres of operations.”

The commander emphasized: “Accordingly, I expect nothing short of a 100 percent pass in this examination.

In addition, I will also touch on candidate assessment and administration. I want to remind you that the Army Headquarters policy allows a maximum of three attempts for each candidate to pass this examination.”

Major General Aligbe urged officers to put in their best in order to obtain the minimum marks required to earn a pass.

According to him, the current global challenges of terrorism and insurgency and military operations other than war are also major considerations in the examination setting.

He assured them that members of the examination panel would be objective, realistic and innovative in setting of the requirements.

In his welcome address, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Emmanuel Emekah, said the examination is a significant evaluation of the candidates’ competence, leadership qualities and readiness for higher responsibilities.

Emekah, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Brigadier-General Dawha Adamu, said the practical promotion examination marks a defining point in the candidates’ chosen career.

He said: “To the candidates present here today, let me congratulate you for reaching this stage particularly scaling through the medical and physical fitness test.

The examination you are about to undertake is not just a formality; it is a significant evaluation of your competence, leadership qualities, and readiness for higher responsibilities. It marks a defining point in your chosen career, and I urge you to take it with all seriousness.

Let me, however, allay any fears or anxieties you may harbour. The examination questions have been carefully structured in line with your approved syllabus. If you have studied diligently, there is absolutely no reason you should not excel.

I am, indeed, optimistic that those who have adequately prepared will come out in flying colours. Indeed, if all of you have put in the required effort in preparations, a 100 percent success rate is not only possible, but well within reach.”
