The Convener of the Arewa Think Tank, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, has commended the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) for its proactive and well-coordinated approach to managing snakebite emergencies, particularly the availability of snake anti-venom across all FCTA-owned hospitals and public health centres in Abuja.

Yakubu, in a statement, yesterday, described the assurance by the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environmental Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, as a demonstration of responsible governance and evidence-based public health planning.

“The clarification by the FCTA shows that the Administration has not only anticipated this public health risk but has also taken concrete steps to ensure that no resident of the FCT is left without access to life-saving snake anti-venom,” Yakubu said.

He noted that the central stocking of polyvalent and multivalent anti-snake venoms at the Abuja Central Medical Stores, coupled with strict cold-chain management and expert guidance from veterinary professionals, reflects global best practices in emergency health preparedness.

He said the FCTA’s collaboration with veterinary doctors to identify prevalent snake species in the FCT demonstrates a scientific and data-driven approach to healthcare delivery, ensuring that the right anti-venoms are available where and when they are needed.

While expressing sympathy to the family of the late Ifunanya Nwangene, he cautioned against premature conclusions that could undermine public confidence in health institutions.

“Loss of life is tragic and painful, but it is important to rely on verified medical facts. The prompt response by the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, and the broader clarification by the FCTA show that systems are in place and functioning,” he stated.

He further praised the FCTA for its public enlightenment efforts, including educating residents on snakebite prevention, appropriate first-aid measures and the dangers of harmful traditional practices, such as wound cutting, tourniquets or herbal applications.

He also highlighted the Administration’s investment in emergency response infrastructure, including the expansion of road networks and the deployment of 12 fully equipped ambulances, as a critical step in reducing response times and improving survival outcomes.

“The emphasis on prevention, early hospital presentation, strict clinical protocols and enforcement of standards shows that the FCTA is serious about safeguarding lives,” Yakubu added.

He reaffirmed his group’s support for the FCTA’s health reforms and urged residents to trust public health facilities, follow medical guidance and promptly report emergencies.

“The FCTA has shown leadership, preparedness and compassion. These efforts deserve recognition, not distortion,” Yakubu added.
