Elder statesman and founding member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Onwuka Ukwa, has called on the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris Kpotum to investigate the roles of the police and Independent National Electoral Committee (INEC), in the lingering leadership tussle in the party.
Addressing newsmen in Enugu on the recent victory of Chief Martin Agbaso, Chief Ukwa expressed concern that the two government agencies which are supposed to be impartial, actually went to court to vacate an order for a political party.
“It is strange, because the two agencies are not designed to function as political parties but as umpires.”
Ukwa described Monday’s reconfirmation of Agbaso as the national chairman of APGA, by the Enugu Appeal Court as a true validation of the right of party members to choose their leaders as opposed to imposition.
The Appeal Court dismissed an application seeking to vacate an earlier pronouncement which declared Agbaso the authentic national chairman of the party.
Analysing the APGA crisis, Ukwa said the matter hinges on three fundamental issues, including right of members to choose their leaders, fight to ensure that APGA remains a national party in keeping with the vision of founding fathers.
“The third is to ensure and guarantee equitable, fair and just distribution of major party offices and positions. A deliberate allocation of major political offices to a single state is unacceptable.
“To have a governor, national chairman, national leader, chairman BOT, 2014 constitutional conference APGA nominee, APGA ambassadorial positions during president Jonathan’s tenure allocated to the same state, is unbelievable display of arrogance to the detriment of the party.”
Ukwa called on party faithful across the country to remain loyal to Chief Agbaso, assuring that his leadership is for all without exception and in the best interest of the party.
