Abdullahi Abdulmajeed has said this year’s primary elections of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will be highly competitive, describing the contests as intense battles that will be fought with strong political passion across the country.

Speaking on the ongoing preparations for the party primaries on ARISE News, Abdulmajeed said many aspirants see securing the APC ticket as almost equivalent to winning the main election, especially in constituencies where the party enjoys strong dominance.

According to him, this belief has made the race for party tickets even tougher, with aspirants pushing hard to emerge as candidates ahead of the general elections.

“When you look at it, many people believe that in many constituencies, once you get the APC ticket, you are effectively set for the office,” he said.

He explained that while some constituencies would witness open contests, senatorial races in states with second-term governors have generated serious discussions around consensus arrangements and political negotiations.

Abdulmajeed noted that these conversations involve strategic compromises and agreements among party leaders, stretching from President Bola Tinubu down to relevant party committees handling the primaries.

He said the process includes give-and-take among stakeholders to ensure party stability and reduce unnecessary conflicts.

According to him, the National Assembly has also played a role by requesting the return of some lawmakers, with the president reportedly approving several of those requests, although a few exceptions were made.

He stressed that despite efforts to promote consensus in some areas, many APC primaries would still be fiercely contested because of the high stakes involved.

The APC chieftain maintained that the intensity of the primaries reflects the party’s strength and the confidence many politicians have in its electoral chances.
