Hon. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, has called on religious, community, and political leaders to unite in support of President Bola Tinubu in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.

In a statement released in Osogbo yesterday, Oyintiloye, a former lawmaker, highlighted the need for Nigerians, regardless of their political or religious affiliations, to come together to tackle the ongoing security challenges facing the nation.

He expressed concern over remarks made by former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the potential deployment of military forces to Nigeria in response to alleged killings of Christians, saying, “This should be a source of concern for every Nigerian.”

While acknowledging the efforts of President Tinubu and security agencies to combat violent crime, Oyintiloye emphasised the importance of national unity in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty.

He noted that the current security crisis has developed over many years and is not solely a result of Tinubu’s administration, asserting that Nigeria has never been at war against any particular religion.

“We must rally behind the President at this time. Our religious or political affiliations are irrelevant; what we need is unity to protect the sovereignty of our country,” he said. He pointed out that all religions in Nigeria—Muslims, Christians, and others—have been adversely affected by terrorism, which does not discriminate based on faith.

Acknowledging the U.S. concerns regarding Nigeria’s security situation, Oyintiloye suggested that sharing intelligence and providing military equipment would significantly assist Nigeria in its fight against insecurity.

However, he cautioned against the deployment of foreign troops, warning that this could complicate matters further.

He urged all Nigerians, especially opposition members, to be cautious with their statements, as the implications of discord could affect everyone. Additionally, he called on newly appointed military chiefs to live up to the trust placed in them by the President and to work diligently to combat terrorism.

“This is not a time for opposition politics,” he stated. “Our hopes and aspirations for public office depend on the continued existence of Nigeria.” He emphasized the need for cooperation among all stakeholders to effectively combat terrorism, asserting that while foreign support in terms of equipment would be beneficial, foreign troop deployment could lead to greater challenges.

“What President Tinubu needs at this time is the support of all Nigerians,” Oyintiloye said.
