The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has petitioned security agencies, including the Nigeria Army, over plans by some elements of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to stage a protest on Tuesday in Abuja, allegedly to influence proceedings at the Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abuja.

Chairman of Edo State APC, Emperor Jarret Tenebe, in a statement on Monday in Abuja, specifically “urged security agencies, including the Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Army, to be vigilant and take necessary measures to prevent a potential disruption of the Attorney General’s office by supporters of PDP and Asue Ighodalo.”

“The disruption allegedly aims at influencing the ongoing Edo State governorship tribunal,” adding that “the PDP and supporters of its governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo plan to carry out this unlawful act on Tuesday. There is need for the security agencies to be proactive in preventing this disruption.”

Tenebe further warned that “the party will not tolerate any attempt to compromise the judicial process or disrupt the peace.”

The opposition party and Ighodalo are currently challenging the outcome of the September 21 governorship election in Edo State, where the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) returned the APC candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, as winner.

Tenebe also charged security agencies to take the threat seriously and hold organisers of the protest accountable for the outcome of their actions.
