The Chisco Group has presented two fully maintained buses to the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ikoyi, Lagos, as part of activities marking the 70th birthday of its founder and executive chairman, Chief (Dr.) Chidi Anyaegbu, MFR, CON.
The buses, with a combined capacity to convey up to 100 persons at a time, are intended to strengthen the centre’s ability to transport awaiting-trial inmates safely and promptly to court.
The intervention was undertaken by Chief Anyaegbu, with the support of Chief Obinna Anyaegbu, Managing Director of Chisco Transport Limited, and Machine Nationwide Limited; members and staff of the Chisco Group; family members; friends and well-wishers from Nigeria and abroad.
The intervention was also backed by members of the Millennium Circle, a social-impact organisation convened by Chief Obinna Anyaegbu.
The initiative responds to an urgent operational constraint within the criminal justice system: the shortage of reliable vehicles for transporting awaiting-trial inmates to court.
The Nigerian Correctional Service itself recognises insufficient court-transport vehicles as one of the factors affecting the timely disposal of awaiting-trial cases.
The Ikoyi facility currently holds more than 3,000 awaiting-trial inmates, including people whose cases have remained unresolved for extended periods. Inadequate court transportation can contribute to missed court appearances, adjournments and further delays in determining their cases.
Speaking on the intervention, Chief (Dr.) Chidi Anyaegbu said: “I chose to mark my 70th birthday by responding to a practical problem affecting the liberty, dignity and future of fellow Nigerians. Justice cannot move efficiently when the people who require it cannot get to court. These buses are our contribution towards making the justice process more accessible and effective.”
In his remarks, Chief Obinna Anyaegbu described the donation as a long-term operational commitment rather than a ceremonial presentation.
“This is not simply a donation of two buses. We are applying Chisco’s experience in mobility, fleet management and automotive maintenance to an important public need. We will support the maintenance of the vehicles, monitor their utilisation and work with the correctional authorities to measure their impact on court attendance and case progression.”
The Chisco Group will collaborate with the facility to establish baseline and continuing performance indicators, including:
Number of court movements completed;
Number of inmates transported;
Reduction in court appearances missed because of inadequate transportation;
Vehicle availability and maintenance performance; Progression of affected awaiting-trial cases; and Measurable contribution to reducing custodial congestion.
The Group intends to compare future performance against the facility’s previous court-transport records to determine the intervention’s actual impact.
Automotive training and productive reintegration beyond court transportation
Machine Nationwide Limited, a Chisco Group company, has committed to supporting automotive maintenance and technical-skills training for eligible inmates.
The proposed partnership will assist in strengthening the Centre’s workshop and developing practical capabilities in vehicle maintenance and related automotive trades.
The objective is to help participants acquire employable skills, establish livelihoods and reintegrate into society more successfully after their release.
The Officer in Charge of the Ikoyi Medium Security Custodial Centre welcomed the intervention and expressed the Centre’s willingness to collaborate with Chisco
Transport Limited and Machine Nationwide Limited on vehicle maintenance, workshop development and technical training.
Chief Obinna Anyaegbu added: “Correctional intervention must extend beyond confinement. People should leave the system with stronger prospects than they had when they entered it.
“Skills, dignity and legitimate economic opportunities are essential to reducing reoffending and helping individuals become productive members of society.”
The Group recognises the efforts of the Federal Government and the Nigerian Correctional Service, while acknowledging that the scale of the challenge requires responsible private-sector and civil-society participation.
For Dr. Chidi Anyaegbu, the initiative reflects a lifelong Pan-African commitment to enterprise, human dignity and nation-building. It also represents the Chisco Group’s belief that the capabilities developed through business should be deployed to solve urgent social and institutional problems.
