The court case involving the driver of boxer Anthony Joshua has been adjourned in Nigeria following a fatal road crash that claimed the lives of two of the athlete’s close associates.

Adeniyi Kayode, 46, appeared before Sagamu Magistrates Court in Ogun State on Tuesday over the incident, which occurred on 29 December along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The hearing was postponed until 25 February after prosecutors requested additional time to obtain legal advice.

Kayode faces four charges, including causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid driver’s licence. He was earlier granted bail in the sum of five million naira.

Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, died at the scene after their Lexus SUV collided with a stationary lorry. Joshua, who was also in the vehicle, sustained injuries and was treated in hospital before being discharged two days later.

Kayode did not address the court during the hearing.

Following the crash, Joshua paid tribute to Ayodele and Ghami on social media, describing them as special individuals and offering condolences to their families.

The former heavyweight champion, who has family roots in Sagamu, was travelling to the town to visit relatives for New Year celebrations at the time of the accident.
