The newly elected President General of Nkwelle Ezunaka Community in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State has expressed his determination to fight land grabbers to a standstill in the community.
He made the pledge when the community elected a new leadership of the town Union to pilot of the affairs of the community for the next three years.
The peaceful election which was monitored and supervised by the state ministry of local government and chieftaincy matters led by Mr Mike Okechukwu, chairman of the council area Mr Emma Nweke as well as security operatives of police and DSS.
The electoral committee chairman Mr Charles Chikadibia before the commencement of the election announced the procedure for the election which included an open secret ballot system and voting by age grades.
At the end of the election Chief Willy Okafor was elected and emerged as the President General unopposed with 340 votes while Chief Nonso Izuchukwu emerged as the 1st Vice President with 282 votes and Chief Sunday Obiakwa emerged 2nd President unopposed with 323 votes.
Other elected leaders include; Mr Vitalis Nwakobi (Secretary), Mr Obi Anyakora (Vice Secretary), Chief Nchekwube Udeagwu (Treasurer), Mr Tulugo Okafor (Financial Secretary), M. Ubaka Onwuanyi (PRO), Mr Amaechi Tagbo (Provost1) and Mr Augustine Orefo (Provost2).
The new President General Chief Okafor in his acceptance speech thanked governor Chukwuma Soludo and the people of the community for the trust reposed on him to serve the community.
He said that as the chief servant of the community he will bring peace and unity, and will legally recover all the lands taken over by persons or groups of persons as well as other communities.
“I will take this community to greater heights, I have done this before as caretaker committee chairman within the shortest period and I will still do it. There are a lot things to correct and a lot of things to do. It will be a collective work with my people who voted for me because I will not do it alone.
“I have started the war against the land grabbers and this period I will fight them to stand still. My promise is that we going to sanitize the land system. We are going to sort out boundary issues and we are going to take back our land from those who encroach on our land and we going to achieve that legally. I thank Mr Governor for securing the state,” Chief Okafor said.
The chairman of Oyi Council Area, Mr Emma Nweke, who congratulated the winners thanked the community for their large turnout of the voters, noting that the election was transparent, peaceful and no Victor, no vanquish as it was a family election.
He said that governor Chukwuma Soludo had announced that all the communities in the state would be elected leadership instead of the caretaker committee for peace and good leadership, saying that the election was going on across most of the communities in the state with different dates.
In his remarks, the former House of Reps member and APC candidate for Oyi/Ayamelum federal constituency Hon. Chinedu Eluemuno an indigene of the community expressed happiness over the large turnout and peaceful conduct of the election.
