A political analyst and social commentator, Jean Marie Bissoko, has taken a fresh position on the action taken against blogger, Rumani by X, formally known as Twitter.

Recall that Twitter suspended Rumani’s account after a satirical comment against the Democratic Alliance, DA, leader, John Steenhuisen.

While faulting Twitter’s action, Bissoko, a popular analyst said a similar comment by a DA member was ignored, amplifying the accusations against the DA, suggesting a possible tacit endorsement of discriminatory practices.

According to Bissoko: “The South African social media realm was set ablaze with the suspension of blogger Rumani from Twitter after his satirical take on DA Leader John Steenhuisen. What began as a light-hearted jest swiftly spiralled into a contentious issue, pitting the concept of free speech against the powers of censorship. The unequal treatment of similar offenses has thrown the spotlight on the DA’s silent acquiescence and the larger, underlying racial tensions.

“As the dust settled on Rumani’s blocked account, a stark contrast emerged: another post, made by a DA member that mocked a racial group, seemingly bypassed scrutiny. This inconsistency in handling cases of satire versus actual derogation has emboldened accusations of racial bias and selective censorship, sparking outrage and disillusionment among the populace.

“Despite repeated attempts to engage with DA representatives for their stance on the matter, there was no forthcoming comment. This wall of silence has only amplified the accusations against the DA, suggesting a possible tacit endorsement of discriminatory practices, further alienating those seeking transparency and accountability.

“We have also contacted a media personality and a congressman who requested to stay anonymous. They drew parallels between the treatment of Rumani’s case and the discriminatory practices reminiscent of apartheid, similar to what is happening in Israel in terms of racial discrimination against Palestinians. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the progress yet to be made in South Africa’s ongoing journey towards racial equality and justice.

“The entire episode surrounding Rumani’s tweet has become a testing ground for the democratic values professed by the DA. It raises questions about the true principles guiding the party and its commitment to equality and freedom of expression in the digital age.

“Rumani’s encounter with censorship is more than an individual’s clash with a social media policy; it represents a societal struggle with race, expression, and political power. The DA’s reluctance to speak on the issue speaks volumes, placing the onus on the public to interpret their silence and its implications for democracy in South Africa.”
