Amoo’s rape case appeal rejected in Denmark, heads for Supreme Court
Nigerian and former FC Copenhagen player, Akinkunmi Amoo has had his appeal rejected, and his prison sentence for rape therefore stands.
The former FC Copenhagen player Akinkunmi Amoo was sentenced to one year in prison last year for rape at the Hotel Imperial in Copenhagen.
The district court’s judgment from last summer was upheld on Thursday afternoon.
The Eastern High Court has rejected the appeal after Amoo did not appear in court on Monday, press liaison judge Jacob Waage tells Denmark’s new outlet Ekstra Bladet.
The appeal was supposed to start on Monday, but Amoo did not appear because he had not received his visa in time.
The appeal was therefore postponed, and the prosecution demanded that the appeal be rejected, which the Eastern High Court has now complied with.
FC Copenhagen bought Amoo in Hammarby in January 2022 for over DKK 30 million, but it was never a success for the parties.
He made four appearances, partly because of a serious knee injury to the Nigerian.
Amoo left FCK for free in September last year, after which he went to Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia. He has been without a club since March 2024.
According to the trial, Amoo was found guilty of all three counts – indecent assault, attempted rape, and rape in a sexual relationship other than intercourse.
He was also expelled from Denmark and banned from entering for six years and the case was appealed on the spot.
Amoo told the court last year that the woman who accused him of violations had wanted match tickets from him, and he claimed that he was blackmailed for 30,000 kroner and a football shirt.
A key witness denied having blackmailed Amoo, but said, among other things, that the then FCK player offered the witness a shirt and money to not report him to the police.
Meanwhile, Amoo’s lawyer has subsequently stated to Ekstra Bladet that they will take the case further to the Supreme Court.
