Amnesty International Nigeria has condemned Friday night’s attack by Boko Haram that claimed 63 lives in Darul Jamal, Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.
In a statement released on Saturday, Amnesty said the vicious attack demonstrated the terror group’s contemptible disregard for human life.
The group observed that the town’s people were displaced several times and returned back to their homes less than six months ago, after they were given assurance that security has been restored.
Reports indicated that more than 20 houses and 10 buses were destroyed in Darul Jamal, while at least 13 drivers and labourers, who had been working on reconstruction efforts in the town were killed.

“Before yesterday’s tragedy Boko Haram has been repeatedly launching attacks on the town. During such violent raids, Boko Haram fighters killed people trying to flee and looted livestock, money, and other valuables,” Amnesty said.
It added, “Boko Haram must end its campaign of vicious and unlawful killings of civilians.”
The global human rights group stated that Nigerian authorities must do more to protect civilians and bring the suspected perpetrators of all such attacks to justice.
“As well as killings targeting civilians, Boko Haram continues to abduct women and girls and extensively loot property.
“The fact that such atrocities remain commonplace shows that more needs to be done to protect civilians and ensure that families of victims receive reparation and justice,” Amnesty stressed.
