Winning the Miss Edo International crown gave Tracy Okodede a shot of adrenaline and fired her up to earnestly prepare for the Miss Nigeria International pageant, which she saw as an opportunity to project her beloved state at both national and international levels. In this interview, she relives her journey to win the Miss Nigeria International pageant.

Telling us a bit about yourself and what inspired you to participate in the pageant?

First, I’m passionate about purpose-driven leadership, women’s empowerment, and community impact. Beyond the glamour, I was inspired to participate in the pageant because I saw it as an opportunity to use my voice for something meaningful. I wanted to show that beauty, intelligence, and compassion can co-exist, and that a crown can be both a symbol of grace and service.

How did you first hear about the Miss Nigeria International pageant?

I actually became part of the Miss Nigeria International pageant through my journey as Miss Edo International. Representing Edo State was such an honour, and one of the prizes that came with my title was the opportunity to compete at the national level. It felt like a natural next step, a chance to not only represent my state on a bigger platform but also to share my message with a wider audience. For me, it wasn’t just about wearing another crown; it was about growing in purpose and continuing to use my voice to inspire others across Nigeria.

There must have been so many amazing contestants. Were you expecting to be announced as the winner, or did it come as a surprise?

Honestly, it was a mix of both excitement and disbelief. Every contestant was incredible, and we all had something unique to offer. But deep down, I also knew I had poured my heart into this, not to compete, but to connect. When my name was called, I realized it was not just a win for me, but for everyone who believed in grace, perseverance, and purpose.

What do you think made you stand out from the rest of the participants?

I believe that what made me stand out was authenticity. I showed up as my true self, not trying to be perfect, but present, passionate, and purposeful. I think people could feel that my intentions went beyond the stage. I wanted to represent a generation of women who lead with empathy, intelligence, and faith.

Every journey has its hurdles. What were some of the challenges you faced during the campaign and training period?

There were definitely challenges, from time management and self-doubt to maintaining physical and emotional balance. But those moments taught me resilience and the importance of staying grounded. I learned that confidence doesn’t come from never falling, but from always rising with grace.

Can you share a bit about your preparation process, how did you balance confidence, presentation, and staying authentic to yourself?

My preparation process was truly a team effort. I was blessed to have the unwavering support of my manager, Mrs. Debby Benson, the First Lady of Edo State, Mrs Anani Okpebholo, my family, and my amazing friends. Their encouragement, guidance, and belief in me played a huge role in shaping my confidence and presentation. I also focused deeply on staying authentic, reminding myself that true beauty radiates from within. I balanced my physical and mental preparation by praying, practicing, and staying grounded in purpose. Every rehearsal, conversation, and reflection helped me grow not just as a contestant, but as a woman ready to represent with grace and impact.

How did your family and friends react when you were crowned Miss Nigeria International?

They were overjoyed! My family has always been my biggest support system, and seeing their pride made the moment even more meaningful. My friends have been calling me “Queen” ever since, it’s heartwarming to know that my win inspired the people closest to me. And I was able to achieve this with the help of God, my amiable manager, the First Lady of Edo State and Edo State in general.

Winning a national title like this comes with a lot of responsibility. What cause or project are you most passionate about pursuing through your reign?

My reign as Miss Nigeria International is deeply rooted in purpose. I’m passionate about empowering lives through healing, independence, and hope.

My major focus is on occupational therapy awareness, which will entail supporting patients in regaining their independence, confidence, and dignity after illness or injury. I also have a strong heart for single mothers, helping them access employment opportunities and financial stability so they can rebuild their lives and support their children.

In addition, I’m committed to creating awareness about drug abuse, especially among young people, by promoting rehabilitation, education, and second chances.

All these efforts will be united under my foundation — “HerRise Foundation” — built on the belief that “When you empower one girl, you uplift a generation.” Through HerRise, my goal is to create real change, one story, one heart, and one act of compassion at a time.

What is the one thing you’ve learned about yourself through this entire experience?

I’ve learned that purpose is stronger than fear. Every challenge reminded me that I am capable of more than I imagined. I discovered that grace isn’t about being flawless, it’s about walking confidently in your truth, even when you’re still growing.

What message would you like to share with young women across Nigeria who dream of following in your footsteps?

To every young woman out there I say: your dreams are valid. Don’t let fear or circumstance limit your vision. You don’t need to be perfect to start, you just need to be authentic and driven. Wear your confidence like your crown, lead with kindness, and never forget that beauty has its highest purpose when it empowers others.
