Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State, Command, Waheed Ayilara, has died in Lagos shortly after he arrived from Uyo to attend the retirement and birthday ceremonies of Assistant Inspector-general of Police Yetunde Longe, in Lagos.
The CP later stayed back after the pulling-out parade of the immediate past police force secretary to enable him attend the wedding of IGP Kayode Egbetokun’s daughter, billed to hold in Lagos next Saturday.
It was gathered that Ayilara died early yesterday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, where doctors are on strike.
A police source hinted that he walked into the hospital on Wednesday for a surgery, but couldn’t make it, as he gave up the ghost during procedure.
A devout Muslim, Ayilara was laid to rest yesterday, in accordance with Islamic rites.
The officer said, “It still a thing of shock to hear that CP Waheed Ayilara has died in a Lagos hospital. The CP, who was hale and hearty, was in Lagos to attend the wedding ceremony of IGP Kayode Egbetokun’s daughter on Saturday and also took out time to grace the occasion of the pulling-out parade of retired AIG Yetunde Longe at the open ground of the Police College, Ikeja, last Tuesday.”
The senior police officer was spotted exchanging pleasantries with colleagues and friends at the ceremony.
The source said the late CP went to the hospital unaided meaning, that he was not all that sick.
The senior police officer speaking in confidence with Daily Sun said the CP may have died as a result of prostrate cancer, but said investigation would be conducted to know the actual cause of death.
Our correspondent saw Ayilara looking excited and taking photographs with his colleagues and friends, including journalists, during the pulling-out/retirement parade of Longe on Tuesday.
