The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has framed Nigeria’s North Central region as a pivotal platform for expanding non-oil exports, underscoring its mineral wealth and robust agriculture as a foundation for diversification.
According to a statement issued by his media aide, Yomi Odunuga, the SGF speaking in Jos, Plateau State, during the commissioning of the 250-seat Senator George Akume Conference Centre at the North Central Zonal Office of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), highlighted how improved logistics could unlock the region’s export potential.
“This region can be a cornerstone of our diversification drive with better logistics and transport links,” Akume told attendees as Special Guest of Honour.
He commended the NSC and the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy for advancing Nigeria’s logistics and maritime thrust, calling the new conference facility a tangible symbol of vision and renewed momentum under President Tinubu’s leadership.

In his remarks, the SGF stressed that global progress is anchored in infrastructure, noting that ports, roads, rail, and dry ports are the arteries of commerce. He reiterated the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasising targeted investments to connect coastal areas with inland zones to boost competitiveness and integration.
“We are building an economy powered by connectivity,” Akume affirmed. “A Benue farmer should be able to move produce smoothly to Lagos Port, just as a Jos exporter should reach global markets without avoidable delays.”
Akume praised the NSC for its role as a Port Economic Regulator, particularly for advancing Inland Dry Ports and zonal coordination offices that bridge seaports with inland communities. The conference centre, he added, will serve as a hub for stakeholder dialogue, policy shaping, and capacity building within Nigeria’s maritime and logistics ecosystem.
The SGF urged stronger collaborations among government, private sector players, development partners, and local communities to sustain infrastructure gains and protect national assets through ongoing maintenance and innovation.
