Nollywood stars Stan Nze, Tina Mba and Lynda Ejiofor-Suleman were among leading figures, who converged in Houston, United States, for the premiere of The Serpent’s Gift produced by award-winning filmmaker Winifred Ajakpovi. The event drew an enthusiastic audience, many of whom responded with visible emotion as the film stirred memories and deep cultural reflection.

The premiere, held in partnership with AfriKoff, was widely described as a success. Winifred received warm commendation from fellow celebrities and fans, several of whom remained long after the screening to engage in extended discussions about the film’s themes.

Those in attendance included Chioma Chukwuka, Adefunke, Emem Isong and other notable figures. Guests were also treated to performances by a Cameroonian dance troupe and the MVP Dancers. Houston Hall was filled to capacity, with proceedings opening solemnly with the Nigerian national anthem, followed by the United States anthem.

Reflecting on the outing, Winifred said the turnout exceeded all expectations. “The event was a success beyond anything we ever imagined. The hall was full, and we had to turn people back on the day because there was no space,” she said, adding, “We had Africans and non-Africans, including Caucasians. People were excited about the culture. The fact that the movie was in Igbo intrigued them, and because it was subtitled, it was easy for the audience to absorb.”

According to the producer, many viewers were reluctant to leave after the screening. She recalled an emotional moment when several women related personally to the story.

“One woman broke down in tears, saying it reminded her of her own experience. That opened a conversation about legacy, widowhood and our practices surrounding widowhood in Nigeria,” she said.

Winifred added that the response reaffirmed her purpose as a filmmaker.

“People are asking for more. I feel satisfied as a producer because I make films not just to entertain, but to confront serious issues and, hopefully, change the narrative. We have started a conversation, and people are now more aware of what can happen and what they can do.”

She also expressed gratitude to AfriKoff, her Houston-based partner, saying, “AfriKoff holds film festivals in the Houston area and focuses on bringing African stories to a wider audience. When they reached out about showcasing The Serpent’s Gift, we agreed to partner with them, and I’m glad we did. It showed how much people need to see and experience our stories.” She noted that the presence of the cast added a rare dimension for audiences outside Nigeria.

Although the film was released in Nigeria in August, the Houston premiere marked its debut in a classic cinema setting abroad, with a strong emphasis on African cultural expression.

“Beyond watching films on YouTube and similar platforms, experiencing them cinema-style, with the actors present and discussing the work, was wholesome,” Winifred said. “There was a rich display of culture—African food, music, talking-drum performances and traditional dances.”

The event also featured a fashion showcase highlighting African styling by BCD Fashion, alongside ethnic designs by QueenNmay, live suya grilling, premium Nigerian cuisine and support from several sponsors. Guests left calling for more screenings, a clear signal that The Serpent’s Gift had struck its mark.
