A board member of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Col. Sam Ahmedu (Rtd), has commended FIBA for its recent intervention in the lingering administrative impasse within Nigerian basketball.
Ahmedu, who also serves on the executive committee of FIBA Africa, gave his assessment while reviewing a letter issued by FIBA Secretary General, Andreas Zagklis, dated March 16, 2026.
He acknowledged that although stakeholders had anticipated an immediate directive for fresh elections following the expiration of the Musa Kida-led board on January 31, 2026, the proposed election date of October 15 remains reasonable under the circumstances.
Ahmedu explained that FIBA’s position was largely influenced by the need to ensure stability ahead of major international commitments, particularly the forthcoming FIBA Women’s World Cup in September.
According to him, introducing a new board at this critical period could pose administrative challenges, referencing Nigeria’s withdrawal from the 2022 competition by the federal government, which ultimately saw Mali replace the African champions.

He further highlighted FIBA’s directive that the NBBF constitution must not be amended prior to elections, describing it as a significant stance that reinforces governance continuity.
“The positives from the letter are clear. It would have been cumbersome for a new board to manage preparations for the Women’s World Cup, especially considering what happened in 2022. Also, FIBA’s insistence on maintaining the current constitution underscores the legitimacy of the existing framework,” Ahmedu noted.
The Zone Three President added that while the letter effectively extends the tenure of the outgoing board, it is crucial for Kida to foster inclusiveness and carry all stakeholders along in the lead-up to the October elections.
Ahmedu stressed that the overall interest of Nigerian basketball should take precedence over individual ambitions, urging all parties to prioritize unity and progress.
He concluded that assigning blame would not serve the development of the sport, emphasizing that basketball must ultimately emerge as the winner.
