CDD gave the charge yesterday in Maiduguri at a two-day workshop on Ethical Reporting and Countering Misinformation, Disinformation and Hate (MDH) ahead of 2027 general elections.

CDD Programme Officer, Chioma Iruke said that the pro-democracy and think-tank advocacy group organized the training to reduce the spread of fake news and misinformation during political era and prevent their impact on social cohesion and peace.

“As Nigeria approaches election period, journalists should understand the great danger pose to the country’s peace, security, good governance and credible election by fake news, misinformation, disinformation and mal-information,” she stared at the workshop.

She urged journalists to equip themselves with available media tools to fact-check information, photographs, videos and even press statements to help the society get true news.

The workshop brought together over 70 media practitioners and focused on deepening their understanding of misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation.

Participants were refreshed of journalism ethics, responsible reporting, and practical verification techniques to ensure accuracy before publishing or sharing information.

The interactive training featured hands-on sessions, real-life case studies, and practical examples designed to strengthen participants’ capacity to counter information disorder in their reporting.
