AGF provides medical support to over 400 Sickle Cell patients

The Adekunle Gold Foundation has strengthened its commitment to improving healthcare access for people living with Sickle Cell Disease, providing critical medical support to over 400 patients during its quarterly outreach held in Lagos on March 14.

The outreach, conducted in partnership with the Sickle Cell Advocacy & Management Initiative, delivered a comprehensive range of healthcare services, including specialist consultations, laboratory investigations, blood transfusions for severe anaemia cases, pain and crisis management, physiotherapy, and the distribution of essential medications. Beneficiaries also received prescription drugs and treatment supplies expected to last up to three months.

Sickle cell disease remains one of the most prevalent genetic disorders globally, with Nigeria accounting for the highest burden, as millions live with the condition and thousands of children are born with it each year.

Founded by award-winning musician Adekunle Gold, who has lived with the condition since childhood, the foundation continues to drive advocacy for increased awareness, improved healthcare access, and sustained research efforts. Speaking at the outreach, the singer highlighted the urgent need for continuous support, noting that beyond the physical toll of the disease, many patients face significant financial challenges in accessing treatment.

In addition to its outreach programmes, the foundation is advancing long-term healthcare solutions. In 2025, it launched the “5 Star Care” initiative, providing free health insurance coverage to 1,000 individuals living with sickle cell disease in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Lagos State Health Management Agency.

The foundation is also expanding its global footprint through a research partnership with the New York University Department of Global Health, aimed at exploring innovative treatment options and improving patient outcomes.

Through its integrated approach to outreach, healthcare access, advocacy, and research, the Adekunle Gold Foundation continues to play a pivotal role in addressing the challenges associated with sickle cell disease while delivering tangible support to affected individuals.
